Glycerin /Glycerol
Glycerin, also known as glycerol, is a 3-carbon structure where each carbon contains a hydroxyl group. It is colorless, odorless and is a heavy, viscous liquid that is sweet-tasting as well as non-toxic. Glycerin can be made synthetically, but is more commonly extracted from natural fats such as soy oil, corn oil, palm oil and other plant or animal derived oils. It forms the backbone of triglycerides and is commonly produced by transesterification of certain fats or oils. Glycerol has been studied extensively and determined to be safe for use in cosmetics, personal care and food products.
Industry Use
Glycerin, also known as Glycerol, is a versatile and widely used chemical compound known for its unique properties and applications. In the chemical and petrochemical industries, it serves as a valuable ingredient due to its non-toxicity, solubility in water, and hygroscopic nature. From pharmaceuticals to industrial processes, glycerin’s diverse uses make it an essential component in many formulations and products.
Meanwhile, household and common commercial uses include:
- Personal Care Products – Common in soaps, lotions, and toothpaste for its moisturising properties
- Antifreeze Solutions – Used as a less-toxic alternative to ethylene glycol in certain cooling and de-icing formulations
- Laboratory Applications – Employed as a stabiliser and cryoprotectant in biochemical and molecular biology settings
Safe Handling and Storage
Although glycerol is considered safe for many applications, correct storage and handling are essential for maintaining product integrity:
- Store in tightly-closed, original container in a dry and cool place
- Protect from freezing and direct sunlight
- Store away from the following materials:
- Strong acids
- Strong alkalis
We supply glycerol/glycerine/glycerin for general use in 500 ml, 2.45 L and 25 L containers, as well as 200 L drums and 1,000 L IBC, ideal for storage purposes
